A temporary residence permit (boravak) in Montenegro may be issued on the basis of a child’s enrolment in a licensed educational institution. When a school holds accreditation from the Ministry of Education of Montenegro, the family is entitled to apply for a boravak on the basis of study. Adriatic College has a state licence and operates within this legal framework.

Documents for a child’s temporary residence permit (boravak)

To apply for a child’s temporary residence permit in Montenegro on the basis of study, the following documents are usually required:

  • A valid child’s passport with an expiry date at least three months beyond the requested period of residence.
  • A copy of the child’s passport (first page).
  • The child’s birth certificate, translated into Montenegrin and notarised by a local notary.
  • Tourist registration (turistička prijava).
  • Proof of study: a certificate from the school confirming enrolment and attendance.
  • Proof of sufficient means of subsistence
  • Proof of accommodation: a notarised tenancy agreement and a property sheet (list nepokretnosti).
  • Health insurance valid in Montenegro (for at least 30 days; in practice, a one-year policy is often arranged).
  • A certificate of no criminal record for applicants over 16 years of age.
  • Consent of the parents or legal guardian for the child to live abroad, translated into Montenegrin and notarised by a local notary.
  • Proof of the grounds for the application: usually a letter explaining the purpose of stay (study at a specific school).
  • Receipts confirming payment of administrative fees (usually 5 and 2 euros, paid on site).
  • Photographs and a completed application form; the form is completed in person at the office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP).

Documents for a parent under family reunification

To obtain a residence permit for a parent on the basis of family reunification, the same set of documents as for the child is used. In addition, a copy of the child’s boravak is required. A certificate from the school is not needed in this case, and the amount of the administrative fee differs and is specified at the place of submission.

A temporary residence permit on the basis of family reunification may be issued to one parent of a child studying in Montenegro.

A temporary residence permit on the basis of study is issued for one year and may be renewed twice in succession, provided that the child continues studying at the school.
